The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council.  We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need. 

We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities.  

We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, and family learning.  In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people.

Our work-based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas: 


Nursery Workers
Teaching Assistants
Leadership/Management; and 
Customer Care. 


We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop. 

Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need.

What is the job role?The Adult Education Service is positioned in the Employment, Skills & Adult Education team within the Council’s Regeneration and Economy Directorate. The strategic intent of the service is to maximise the employability of adults, so they can progress into work, further learning/training, or engage in voluntary, social and community activities.

The Service is recruiting a number of tutors with relevant skills, knowledge and experience in particular subject areas to design, plan, deliver and report on high quality adult learning programmes. These will include (non)accredited courses taught online and/or face-to-face in a range of community settings within the city. Provision will be delivered during the daytime, evening and at weekends, throughout the year, to meet identified needs.

What are we looking for?

1 x Lecturer Level 1 – with a focus on Business Administration (1.0FTE – 37 hrs p/wk; permanent)

1 x Lecturer Level 1 – with a focus on Family Learning (0.6xFTE –  22.2 hrs p/wk; fixed term until 31.8.25)

1 x Lecturer Level 1 – with a focus on Early Years Education and Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (0.8FTE 30.5 hrs p/wk; permanent)

1 x Lecturer Level 1 – with a focus on English Functional Skills/GCSE (0.6FTE – 22.2 hrs p/wk; permanent)

1 x Lecturer Level 1 – with a focus on Digital Skills (23.13 hrs p/wk; permanent)

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Who are we looking for?For all roles you will have up to date knowledge of curriculum practice and issues, and relevant teaching experience within a community-based adult education context. You will need to demonstrate the ability to deliver an (in)formal, culturally competent, and inclusive curriculum to raise aspirations and make a difference to residents from diverse backgrounds within the city.  

You will have experience of setting individual targets and evaluating learner progress and achievements through both accredited and non-accredited provision. You must evidence a good understanding of equity and inclusion, safeguarding and Prevent and be proactive in relation to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

You will have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a range of audiences and have the skills to promote Adult Education provision using a range of methods, including social media.

You should have English and Maths qualification at Level 2, a teaching qualification at Level 3. A subject specification qualification at Level 4 or equivalent is also desirable. The ability and willingness to teach in a range of venues within in the city, and throughout the year, is important.
