My client are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services.

Role

This is an opportunity for an experienced Senior Highways Engineer to lead design teams on a wide range of projects. You will be part of a large team working on a major highway scheme reporting on a day-to-day basis to the Project Manager, or acting as Project Manager on small to medium scale projects. You will also report to the Project Director for (typically) contractual and financial matters.

The role will combine a good technical understanding of highways design with the ability to deliver and manage whilst recognising quality, cost and time demands. It will include design, management and coordination, often liaising with other multi-disciplinary contributors to the project.

You will also be given the opportunity to assist senior staff with the management of larger projects including quality and project management, and to mentor junior staff in the design and management of highways schemes. You may also be required to assist with bidding for new work.

As a senior highways engineer you will be required to:

Bring sound technical knowledge to the team.

Work independently and proactively on all aspects of highways works, including alignment, and drainage, at all stages from concept and feasibility through to detailed design and build.

Prepare technical, commercial and progress reports, programmes and other documents to monitor, control and report progress to our clients.

Lead small design teams and have responsibility for delivery to the specified cost, quality and programme.

Mentor colleagues, including graduates, technicians and apprentices - providing guidance, training and feedback.

Contribute to technical and financial responses for bids, tenders etc.

Ensure compliance with adherence to local Arup Management System Assurance procedures.

Report to the local highways team leader or project manager and liaise on a regular basis with other teams, offices, clients and external contacts.

Occasionally work with, and from, other offices.

Requirements and skills

Experience in the UK and/or an overseas highways industry is essential. Key requirements include:

Appropriate degree level qualification - BEng / MEng or similar.

Civil engineer with over five years post-graduation experience, or

Design technician with a minimum of six years post-qualification (HNC/HND) experience.

Working towards, or ideally, a Chartered or Incorporated member of the ICE, CIHT or similar.

Experience of leading design teams undertaking design packages as part of a major highway scheme, or small to medium size projects.

An excellent working knowledge and experience of applying relevant highway design codes (e.g. DMRB).

Ability in, and demonstrable experience of, the application of 3D highway design software packages (e.g. InRoads, MX, Civils 3D, etc) on major highways.

Confident with good communication skills.

Ability to liaise with external parties, as primary contact would include clients (at a technical level), contractors, and government agencies.

Solid experience in one or more areas of highways technical capability such as alignment, junction design, drainage, pavement, signs and road markings.

Ability in design and/or construction contract and specification preparation.

Experience of design and build an advantage.
