The Development Management service plays a key role in the delivery of
growth across Wigan facilitating delivery of the aspirations and
objectives set out in the adopted Local Plan Core Strategy, through
providing employment and housing land, protecting the Borough’s built
and environmental assets to promote Wigan as a key location for future

This exciting role is part of the Growth and Housing service and is at
the heart of this agenda. You will be part of the Development
Management team working to the Team Leader as part of a wider
Development Management and Building Control service. You will be
supported by a Business Support Team. Your role will be to manage a
caseload consisting of a range of planning applications,
pre-application enquiries and appeals. You will be a qualified Town
Planner and either a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute or
willing to complete Chartered Membership of the Institute at the
earliest opportunity.

In this job you will need:

1. A degree or equivalent in town planning or a related professional
discipline, and a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute or
working towards Chartered Membership of the Royal Town Planning
Institute through the Assessment of Professional Competence

2. Ideally, some experience of working in a town planning office,
either in the public or the private sector

3. An appreciation of the national, sub-regional and local context
within which the planning system operates, and the relevance of
this to individual planning decisions, including planning appeals

4. An appreciation of the political dimensions in planning and local

5. A good understanding of Development Management guidance and

6. An appreciation of the key issues and factors to take into
consideration in the assessment of planning applications

7. An appreciation for how planning can be proactive in helping make
good development happen

8. An excellent communicator, in written, spoken, graphic and
multi-media forms

9. Able to work well as part of a diverse team

10. Self-organised and able to work well alone with minimum
supervision and meet deadlines
