Our client is a world leader in their field. They manufacture innovative engineering solutions associated with the movement of fluids. Our client’s products are supplied to a variety of markets including; Industrial Automation, Commercial Vehicles, Energy, Food & Beverage, Life Sciences and Rail.

They are looking to recruit a Senior Design Engineer / Team Leader. Reporting to the Technical Director this role is responsible for supporting the Product Development strategy delivering profitable organic growth and continuous improvement. The role is part of the Engineering Department and involves working effectively with the Projects, Production and Quality Engineering teams and Manufacturing Department.

This role is responsible for managing a small team of Design Engineers and actively driving the team to meets its business objectives.

Technical Responsibilities

* Technical evaluation of engineering opportunities providing expert engineering input.
* Apply innovation to product development, conceptualise and design pioneering new products outside the existing product range in line with the product development and diversification strategy.
* Organise and plan new product development strategies and qualification requirements.
* Apply strong business acumen to development activities managing cost and profitability expectations.
* Sign off and manage technical gatekeeping reviews.
* Interpret and apply relevant engineering standards, legislation, certification and customer compliance requirements.
* Encourage concurrent engineering applying appreciation for manufacturing methodology, process capability, assembly, testing methodology and inspection process and capability.
* Apply VAVE to product design, ensuring manufacturing costs are minimised and cost targets are achieved working coherently with production engineers.

Team Leader Responsibilities

* Co-ordinate the work of the team setting targets, deadlines and objectives for each team member of the team, ensuring targets are met.
* Work closely as part of the Engineering management team to ensure consistent approach is applied across all teams.
* Authorisation of holidays and management of absence.
* Raise resourcing concerns to the Technical Director.
* Taking responsibility for the recruitment of personnel.
* Undertake appraisals and performance reviews highlighting training and development needs and ensuring these are met.
* Take responsibility for full and comprehensive induction of all new personnel before they commence work, completing probationary reviews.
* Ensure adequate training is maintained to achieve a flexible work force.
* Ensure all team members are competent to undertake designated roles and monitor performance and where training is required identify needs and ensuring that appropriate learning takes place.

Essential Criteria

* Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent qualification or experience.
* Demonstrable people management experience.
* Knowledge of valve design technologies – relevant experience in materials, mechanics, engineering mathematics, magnetics, fluid power, corrosion, stress and thermodynamics.
* Detailed knowledge of fluid power applications and circuit design, component selection, installation methods, performance interactions and control systems.
* In depth understanding of modern manufacturing methods, inspection and assembly techniques within a precision CNC engineering and electronics environment.
* Ability to lead product development strategies, managing technical risk mitigation, design validation and qualification requirements.
