1. To lead and direct the staff team to provide high quality, person-centred care in a way which promotes the dignity, privacy, safety and independence of people using the Service.
2. To ensure the effective use of resources in providing this care and support.
3. To supervise and coach the staff team in ways which ensure good practices are developed and maintained within the Service.
4. To promote the Equality and Diversity of Service Users living and employees working in the environment.
5. To undertake additional management responsibilities as designated by the Service Manager.
Main responsibilitiesPrincipal Duties

Leadership


To be a good role model for all employees, being approachable and providing a regular presence and visibility as well as being consistent in all actions and decisions.
To set and maintain clear standards of care within the Service.
To support the Manager to ensure that new and existing employees are effectively mentored and supported to succeed in their roles.
To ensure all employees are effectively supervised as per policy and annually appraised and that the required standards of performance are being achieved using the approved tools provided.
To support the Manager to build and sustain employee engagement.


General Management


Manage any shortfalls in the duty rota in order to meet minimum staffing levels and the needs of Service Users
In the absence of a more Senior member of the Service’s Management team, report to the Regulator and any other relevant bodies where required, within 24 hours of occurrence, any death, serious illness or incident which affects the wellbeing of Service Users.
Understand the role of the Regulator and support the Management team in any inspection/audit.
To ensure that boundaries with regards to informal disciplinary action (e.g. Reprimands) and absence management are maintained; documented and reviewed


Practice Expectations


Adhere to the NMC Code of Practice and report any clinical concerns to Line Manager without delay.
Through having a good understanding of the disabilities, health and social care needs, strengths and challenges of those who use our services, be able to identify the needs of Service Users and reflect these needs in an up to date, individual plan of care using the appropriate Shaw healthcare documentation
Monitor and assess changes in physical and psychological wellbeing of Service Users; document appropriately and ensure that care plans are updated accordingly; support and participate in formal reviews.
To promote the ownership of care programmes by fully involving Service Users, their families and other significant individuals in developing and agreeing plans and evaluating care delivery. Supporting Service Users to exercise their right of choice in all areas.
Understand and implement our arrangements for responding to safeguarding issues, including taking responsibility for timely and accurate investigation, where appropriate, as well as robust and effective recording and reporting processes to include, where appropriate, professional report development.
Meet the professional and legal responsibilities with regard to the ordering, receipt, safe storage, handling and administration of medication
Provide verbal and/or written handover of care given whilst on duty and report any changes in care needs and physical or emotional well being
Be aware of and appropriately refer to the full range of Shaw healthcare Policies and Procedures; guide and support others to embed understanding from the policies in their own practice
Ensuring that an appropriate and meaningful programme of Activities is available and facilitated by the team and that these are documented appropriately.
Understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality of records and information and to know when certain information may need to be passed on.
Maintain own competence, communicating identified needs/skills gaps through appropriate management/mentor/educator and/or supervision channels
Monitor competence of others and support, through development channels and mentoring, the continuous improvement of practice to promote the safety and comfort of Service Users
Support the development of newly qualified nurses through Shaw’s Preceptorship programme, in line with Section 9.4 of the NMC Code of Conduct
Report any concerns about the practice of others
Respond immediately to reported concerns or those who may be ‘blowing the whistle’.
Prepare for and use own Supervision effectively


Relationships


To establish and maintain good relationships with relatives and friends of Service Users, employees, purchasers, referring agencies, the local community and any other parties with whom Shaw healthcare has dealings.
To always represent Shaw healthcare and the Service in a professional manner
To support the team to provide high quality customer service and to role model the same.


Health & Safety


Identify areas of high risk and document action to be taken; communicate etc
Monitor correct usage of equipment (e.g. hoists, wheelchairs, electric beds, cleaning equipment etc) and ensure appropriate and timely action is taken when incorrect usage is identified to a) safeguard Service User; b) remedy the usage and c) document to ensure learning is cascaded
As an employee of Shaw you must:
Take care of your own health and safety and that of people who may be affected, including service users and visitors by what you do (or do not do);
Co-operate with others on health and safety, and not interfere with, or misuse, anything provided for your health, safety or welfare;
Follow the company’s Policy’s and procedures, training and instruction you have received while at work.
Immediately report and Health and Safety concerns to your Manager.
Be aware of Emergency Plans, such as in event of a fire, and your own role and responsibilities within the plan.
