The Waste Recovery Park is the first plant of its kind in the UK and therefore presents an exciting opportunity for the role of the Principal Operations Manager.

The Principal Operations Manager, in conjunction with the Account Director, will be responsible for the day to day running of the facility, ensuring the plant operations are carried out in accordance with all contractual targets and that all operations comply with the appropriate Environmental Permit, Health and safety regulations and all company policies and procedures.

You will ideally have a waste treatment background with a broad knowledge of continuous processes either in waste recycling or manufacturing.

You should also have experience of successfully managing teams in a tightly regulated environment and be confident in dealing both with statutory regulators, including the Environmental Agency, HSE and stakeholders; and be able to function within the KPI’s of the Contract whilst ensuring that the MT, AD and ATT plants all operate at their optimum.

Experience

- Must be conscientious, able to follow rules set for their work, honouring commitments made, and believe in ethics and responsibility.
- Develops effective approaches for managing self and others through periods of organisational change.
- Technically focused and has the capability to understand complex mechanical processes.
- Knowledge and understanding of waste treatment solutions and associated liabilities and permitting requirements.
- Degree in Engineering or Science.
- At least 5 years experience in a similar position.
- In-depth understanding of gasification and material handling of waste.
- Strong understanding of developing an effective safety culture and promoting continuous improvement while meeting business needs.
- WAMITAB Facility Management Training.
- SAP trained.

Further Experience needed in:

- Effective organisation skills – ability to set and manage own work programme.

- Minimum entry level skills in Microsoft software suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio)
- Ability to understand, implement and challenge commercial contracts.
- Good understanding of market and industry in which operating.
- How to manage costs and maximise value of the contract through efficiencies, effective resource planning and working closely with support teams such as commercial, finance, HSEQ and HR.
- Understand the operational management: how to challenge the specification and milestone targets.
- Knowledge of working in a large organisation.
- Experience of working with group functions and understanding of how this interplays with local account management.
- Good understanding of multi-functional operations.
- Good experience of integrating into a Senior Management Team.
- Good knowledge of SSOW to include SOP’s and take overall responsibility for this.

Key Accountabilities

Customer

- Manage the suppliers and contractors against KPIs to ensure the consistent running of the 3 technologies within the facility.
- Manage the internal relationships including the SPV and the current Milton Keynes Waste Treatment Council Clients.
- Actively involved in the community liaison to ensure that members of the public continue to be informed about the MKWRP project.

Financial

- Managing P&L, accruals and provisions.
- Ensuring performance against original budget.
- Managing cash flow.
- Deliver the agreed margin and revenue through efficiency, utilising productivity data wherever possible.
- Create budget and forecast in agreed time-frame.
- Support monthly financial performance.

Safety and Operations

- Deliver a safe, efficient and effective operation.
- Liaison with existing Milton Keynes management team to ensure everyone remains briefed on the project.
- Develop a culture of safe operations that is never compromised.
- Prioritise health and safety on meeting agendas, conduct VFLs and encourage safe systems of work.

People and Processes

- Plan, organise and manage the business area resource requirements to meet the current and future requirements of the accounts.
- Recruitment of the operational management team that can continue to deliver the service ongoing.
- To act as role model in driving adherence to core procedures, policies and systems.
- Set resourcing/delivery model and monitor its cost.
- Manage training needs, Drive continuous improvement.
- Key measures of success / KPIs
- Resourcing of MKWRP.
- Effective, safe operation of MKWRP facility in accordance with KPIs, Permit, EA and HSE.
- Financial performance against budget expectations.
