Principle Visual Designer and UI Lead (News/Media) - London

£85 to £90k basic

My client is a British newspaper, magazine and digital publisher are looking to hire a Principle Visual Design and User Interface (UI) Lead for their team and help mentor and push them do deliver stronger visual designs for their products.

They have big ambitions. Their National and Regional digital publicationsalready reach an enormous audience, but they want be much bigger, and do much better! They're aiming to change the way that their 10 million daily online users experience their digital products, and revolutionise the world of online news in the process.

They're a small, User Experience & Design team, with backgrounds and experience at many top digital businesses, and they need great creative people with drive, passion and a desire to innovate to come on board and help them make this happen.

The ideal person will be a strong visual designer with very strong roots in graphic design, and an equally strong background in interpreting wireframes to develop stunning user interfaces.

So what type of person are we looking for?

As a Principle Design Lead you are responsible for the concepting, development and execution user interface designs for leading-edge mobile and web products.

You possess a deep understanding and have core strengths in branding, UI design and communications.

You will play an active role in shaping new digital product opportunities for the newspaper.

You are creative, like developing options around a UX theme, and delivering things quickly, getting them out there and seeing how they perform.

You enjoy working collaboratively with product, user experience, design and development folks

You are a great mentor and enjoy developing other designers.

You have a passionate interest in what's going on in the world of digital and UI design and keep abreast of digital trends or set them...


Concept, develop and manage a "best in class" suite of creative products

Provide strong and inspirational design leadership

Provide design direction across all product tracks

Mentor and develop the design team

Establish, develop and maintain a design framework which encompasses all Reach digital products

Apply brand identity systems, typography, photography, colour and other ingredients appropriately to create innovative visual solutions that meet business and audience needs

Develop and maintain visual integrity of digital products from inception to completion and beyond

Create visual prototypes or screens as necessary

Extend existing visual systems/brand guidelines across all media with moderate design changes or interpretation

Provide quality assurance of all creative deliverables

Contribute to the development of the creative teams culture and quality standards

Delegate of day-to-day responsibility to other designers

Elevate and strengthen the creative work coming out of the design team

Educate/mentor other team members, not exclusively the design team

Collaborate with User Experience in the development of products and in ensuring product integrity

Run design/brand related workshops

Writing and maintaining a UI related blog for the newspaper.

Deputise for the Head of UX and Design as required

Experience Guidelines:

Extensive industry/agency experience

Strong design portfolio

Ability to multi-task and work efficiently under pressur
