Advanced Thermal Treatment Manager
Location: Milton Keynes

This role is based on a Waste Recovery park, it’s an exciting new facility which will deal with municipal waste in a sustainable way. It brings together a state-of-the-art mechanical treatment and heat energy recovery technologies to cut the amount of rubbish sent to the landfills to around 3%.

Waste Recovery Park will compromise the following technologies:

- Mechanical Treatment will first sort the waste, ensuring any recyclable items can be extracted. At least 9% of the incoming waste for recycling is expected to be taken out.
- Food & Biodegradable items will be extracted and processed in a fully enclosed anaerobic digester to generate renewable energy. This process will also create a compost-like material which will be available for use on brownfield sites.
- The remaining non-recyclable and non-compostable material will be used as fuel for an Advanced Thermal Treatment plant. This will transform the material into a gas, which is then combusted to generate steam to create electricity in a turbine.

Main Purpose of the Role:

- To maximise the safe production of the Advanced Thermal Treatment plant in line with the business strategy.
- To deliver and supervise tasks effectively to agreed standards, timescales in line with all safety policies.
- Manage all aspects of the safe systems of work along with the release of plant of the Advanced Thermal Treatment.

 Role Responsibilities:

- Safe and efficient operation of the plant during steady state, startup, shutdown and emergency situations as directed by the Operations Manager or nominee from a Central Control Room and/or on the plant as required by the operational demands of the plant.
- Ensure day to day compliance with all aspects of the Environmental Permit, reporting any non-compliance or incident to the Operations Manager or his/her delegate.
- Work within the company’s Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental System and all relevant legislation.
- To be authorised under the safety rules to the level of Senior Authorised Person to apply isolation, locks and safety tags, and the preparation and issuing of safety documents.
- Carry out responsibilities as defined in company Safety Rules and associated procedures.
- Participate in company/site HSE initiatives including the HSE forum activities.
- Implementing company health, safety and environmental management policies and actively participate in company/site HSE initiatives including the HSE forum activities, including procedure reviews on a periodic basis.
- Provide trained, competent labour in the ATT areas.
- Complete labour demands in the various areas within the ATT area, e.g shift checks, plant condition monitoring, visual inspections.
- Comply with company standards and assist in maintaining, with respect to safety, plant operations, environmental control, security and housekeeping.
- Ensure the plant is operated to the agreed procedures and availability.
- Carry out basic instrument calibration.
- Effectively use and interrogate SCADA (Siemens PCS7) system to fault find and optimise plant utilisation.
- Willingness to work overtime and shift work ensuring H&S is the number one goal by following policies, processes, and acting in a safe manner always.
- General administration tasks.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge.
- Monitor the operational performance of the ATT team.
- Motivate and lead team members, provide guidance and advice to other members of the ATT team.
- Deal with day to day discipline and performance management of the team.
- Attend training courses necessary for development of skills needed to carry out the tasks performed.
- Lead by example on Amey’s H&S culture.
- Carry out performance reviews for direct reports and carry out disciplinary procedures where applicable.
- Provide training and refresher training to all staff in the ATT.
- Revision of manuals and systems.
- Planning and delivery full contract training.

A key part of the position would be to build relationships inside and outside of the company. You will need to work closely with the Principle Operations Manager the Assistant Operations Manager as well as shift supervisors and technicians. Outside of the company you will be in regular contact with the Environmental agency, sub-contractors and third party vendors.  


- HNC or equivalent operating process plant qualification.
- Can operate on tools.
