Infrastructure is made up of several business units to include; Highways, Rail & Aviation, Water & Waste, Environment and Power & Security.

About the Job

As Head of Design Engineering, your overall responsibility is the leadership, development and growth of the Design Engineering division. As an in-house design Services team, consisting of regional teams of Design Engineers the overall remit of the division is to provide the wider construction and Infrastructure business units with quick fire, money saving engineering solutions and value engineering services. The team are in place to provide a full range of design solutions including; design and design checking services for temporary works requirements, technical reviews, site visits and audits, buildability, problem / defect resolution etc. As Head of Design Engineering and reporting directly into the Technical Director, your day to day responsibilities in overseeing this important service division, will consist of:

- Meeting internal stakeholders to promote the central Design Engineering teams' , capacity and capability to build work bank (BD element to role)

- Having final sign off on allocation of projects and the authority and courage to say "no" if a project would be better serviced by an external consultant

- Recruitment strategy, overall management and growth of teams in 3 regions

- Visiting regional teams regularly to carry out training, present business strategy and communicate messages

- Reviewing important designs and carrying out design development meetings

- Using Skype and other technologies to ensure effective remote Management of Regional Managers

- Visiting sites as the representative of the design team to see the result and progress of designs and deal with any issues raised by the Operations teams who are effectively the client

- Provide detailed reports on progress to the board working with the Technical Director

- Be the escalation point for disciplinary, staff and budgetary issues

- Budgetary control for expenditure

- Assist with the review of software packages and procurement of new software packages

- Be present at all staff PDR'S and authorise promotion through ranks (Graduate, Design Engineer, Senior Engineer, Principal Engineer, Regional Manager)

- Mentor Regional Managers with their development

- Run training sessions and office briefings for each location

- Provide technical advice and mentorship to Engineering challenges and solutions
