Primary School require SPECIALIST TEACHING ASSISTANT

Autism support experience is a requirement especially in the Primary education sector, or other related environments.

Experience of working alongside children with Autism is a necessity; within this role you will be expected to work on a 1:1 basis alongside a child in the Year 3 class who is diagnosed with Autism and struggles with social and communication needs as well as some behaviour.

The school are keen to appoint a member of temporary staff to work from the 3rd June 2019 until at least the end of the academic year. There is a possibility that the child will require further support into the next academic year. In the past the school have used Teaching Personnel to recruit staff through temp. to perm. options.

The child is currently working in a Year 3 class; academically the child is working at lower levels and targeted to work in line with Year 1 age related levels. The school are therefore open to seeing CVs of candidates who have previously gained experience in KS1 and possibly EYFS.

The school will look to appoint through a series of interviews and observations. After shortlisting the Head teacher has asked for candidates to spend half a day in school. This will comprise of an interview with the Head teacher, SENCO and Business Manager as well as a 1 lesson observation. The observation will give the Head teacher and SENCO the opportunity to see the applying candidates in action working alongside the child. They will be looking for examples of relationship building with the child, the other children and the staff in school. The Head teacher is always keen to give appropriate training for any new member of staff and so she has commented that on the observation it is more about the personality fit and relationship building aspect of the role. Sometimes the child does work in small groups and so it will be part of your role to not only support the child, but also the other children in the group; these children will mainly be lower attaining academically.

The school is currently graded GOOD by Ofsted. The Head teacher has been in post for a number of years and has moved the school from Requires Improvement to a school on the verge of OUTSTANDING. The catchment area for the school is classed as MIXED. With this, the school have to differentiate for the varying academic and social needs of the children arriving in school. The school does have a good local reputation and the Head teacher is well liked in the local cluster group.

Located in the centre of Darwen, the school is relatively easy to travel to through public and private transport. The train station in Darwen is located 10 minutes walk from the school and local bus routes will take you within 5 minutes walking distance.

The expected working hours for this role are 26.5 hours per week.

The role is to be advertised at Level 2; however if you have an equivalent qualification then please do not hesitate to apply for this role.

It must be noted that due to the nature of the child’s special educational needs there is not a guarantee that there will be no physical aggression. It is therefore important that you are comfortable with working alongside children who have aggressive/violent tendencies.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see teachingpersonnel.com/faqs for details.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay.

Teaching Personnel is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All candidates must undertake or have undertaken a valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Full assistance provided.
