JOB TITLE: Finance / Payroll Assistant 
SALARY & BENEFITS: £22,403 plus benefits pro-rata
WORKING HOURS: Part Time - 21 hours per week, hours and days negotiable 

THE COMPANY / ROLE: Are you an experienced finance administrator or bookkeeper with payroll experience and looking for a new challenge?

The Church of England Diocese of Portsmouth covers 139 parishes across south-east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and they now have a fantastic new opportunity for a highly organised individual to join their team as a Finance / Payroll Assistant reporting to the Director of Finance. The role will be primarily located in Old Alresford in Winchester.

As a Finance / Payroll Assistant your duties will be to support the Director of Finance and will be responsible be responsible for all matters relating to staff and clergy payroll within the Portsmouth & Winchester Dioceses. As a member of the finance department you will also cover as necessary in colleagues’ absence or during periods of heavy workloads and to undertake any additional occasional duties as may be required.
This would be a great role for someone with experience looking for Part Time hours to fit around child commitments or someone looking for additional hours.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Operate the monthly payroll systems, keeping to strict payment deadlines; 
• Download HMRC tax codes and process documentation for starters and leavers, including issuing of P45s;
• Calculate any deductions or additions of statutory payments;
• Run payroll and double check variances to previous month and reconcile;
• Once authorised, produce payslips, checking for errors and distribute to employees;
• Produce the export file to the accounts system and import payments into the bank for authorisation;
• Submit monthly EPS (employment payment summary) & FPS (full payment submission) to HMRC;
• Run payroll period end and statutory returns;
• Produce monthly payments (HMRC, Teachers Pension & NEST);
• Produce monthly spreadsheet to be sent to the Church of England Pension Board (CEPB) for all starters, leavers and salary amendments;
• Reconcile monthly Church of England Pension Board (CEPB) payments, and produce amendment data for CEPB;
• Run Payroll tax year end, carrying out year-end procedures and issuing P60’s
• Download and upload teachers’ pension reports (MDC & monthly);
• Run Payroll tax year end, carrying out year-end procedures and issuing P60’s
• Set up new payroll and resolve queries

THE CANDIDATE: The successful Finance / Payroll Assistant must be a self motivated and highly organised person with excellent communication and diplomacy skills, who would thrives on being proactive and would enjoy variety and working in an ever-changing educational landscape.
Candidates will need to have previous experience Payroll or Bookkeeping and working in a fast paced finance environment, and it will be a requirement of the appointment that the Foundation module of our Safeguarding Training is completed along with GDPR training within the probation period. In addition, candidates will need to have time management skills, be extremely organised and be comfortable working to tight deadlines, have a great eye for attention to detail, and will need to be confident liaising with stakeholders of all levels. Candidates will also need to live within commutable distance to Old Alresford in Winchester and due to the rural location of the offices, will need to be a Driver with access to your own vehicle. 

Key Experience/ Characteristics preferred for the Finance / Payroll Assistant role in Portsmouth & Winchester, Hampshire :-

- Previous experience in Payroll and a bust Finance environment essential 
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work to deadlines essential
- Excellent communication, diplomacy and organisational skills essential 
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, and Outlook, and willing to learn Excel and Access
- Prioritise and manage work loads effectively to time lines 
- Must have access to own vehicle and be able to commute to Winchester and occasionally Portsmouth from time to time
