Principal Manufacturing Engineer Systems Engineer

Overview

As a Principal Engineer you will provide broad-ranging technical leadership in research and development activities in advanced manufacturing systems (including the use of digital technologies), and play a vital role in the management and further development of collaborative industrial and academic relationships.

As a subject matter expert, you will provide guidance on our client’s activities in this development area, ensuring a real focus on project delivery and impact for industry, driving development forward that helps bridge the gap between fundamental research and commercial reality. You will work with academics and other technical specialists, and may oversee other engineers and researchers, to understand and influence project design and delivery.

The ideal candidate will think strategically, but will also have the skills to actively broaden networks, identifying and exploiting relevant opportunities for new research activities in conjunction with colleagues. The candidate will also be expected to generate high quality technical material and reports.

Job Purpose

To provide technical leadership in research and development activities in the field of manufacturing systems.

* To provide broad ranging Technical Leadership for the exploitation of successful and timely delivery of outputs from projects in the field of advanced manufacturing systems, including digital technologies. This includes effective: technical leadership, planning, monitoring, good use of resources, analysis and presentation of results to meet project targets. The duties include interface at a strategic level and managing contracts with external partners for major items of infrastructure and equipment, in conjunction with the University’s administrative staff.
* To represent the client as a recognised and credible expert in manufacturing systems. To work with academics to identify the challenges and needs faced by industry (e.g roadmapping) in order to identify, pursue and successfully secure projects to address these challenges. To establish collaborative research activities with partner organisations.
* To broaden the manufacturing network by actively seeking new industrial and academic partners in support of business development activities.
* To prioritise requests from various stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of the projects.
* To be responsible for the activities occurring in the project workshops where required.
* To provide co-supervision of staff to ensure delivery, industrial relevance and applicability.

Requirements

* A Degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline
* Significant industrial experience in the delivery of advanced manufacturing systems
* The ability to provide technical leadership to a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and researchers.
* Extensive knowledge of advanced manufacturing systems
* The ability to analyse and solve complex problems with multiple stakeholders
* Ability to identify key areas of innovation and research
* Ability to influence and negotiate in a confident and professional manner, with excellent communication skills, (written and verbal) to interface appropriately with industrial collaborators, academics and other senior stakeholders.
* Proven ability to correctly prioritise a broad range of requests from many customers, both internal and external and ensure safe operation
* Able to work independently as well as part of a team, managing workloads of self and the team you are line managing.
* Professional membership of appropriate organisations.
* Ability to generate high quality technical material/reports for publication.
* An understanding of the capabilities of specialist equipment that can be found within manufacturing industries
* Experience of working in collaborative projects
