Key Technical Skills

* Good working knowledge of Materials Science and Engineering principles. Specialist knowledge of Materials in a Naval marine environment would be an advantage. This knowledge will be applied to the selection of suitable materials for a very wide variety of applications in the Type 26 build. The materials will be both metals and non-metals the latter category encompassing, for example, plastics, composites, gases and liquids. Understanding Fire test requirements of non-metals and the basic corrosion principles of metals exemplify niche requirements of the role
* Knowledge of complex Legislation such as REACH, RoHS and HSC Regulations and also understanding, for example, UK obligations under International Regulations such as the Montreal Protocols and MARPOL.
* Working knowledge of MoD Policy on Materials selection especially in relation to Hazardous and Restricted materials and conversant with the complex Materials requirements expressed in numerous Def Stans applicable to RN Warships.
* Attention to detail, patience and the ability to assimilate large volumes of technical information from numerous parent sources.
* Good report writing and presentation skills and be able to communicate complex scientific facts to the non-specialist in an informative and positive way.
* Materials advocacy: helping Lead Engineers make informed decisions on the selection and development of their equipments and assisting Procurement in striving for Project affordability.
* Self-motivated and be able to engage positively with the MoD customer, Suppliers and Contractors, Lead Engineers and other project staff.

Key Mental/Analytical Skills and Challenges

* Careful examination of large amounts of documentary evidence to identify inconsistencies and gaps is required – appropriate use of materials has the potential to reduce through life costs and is a key element of Project affordability.

Major Tasks and Activities

* Production of technical justifications for the use of materials which do not meet all the requirements imposed on the T2
* Review of Material sections of ITT Contractor Responses
* Review and assessment of Contractors deliverables
* Reviews of other technical documents’ materials contents

Additional Key Accountabilities

* To ensure that banned materials are not used on the Type 26 GCS
* To ensure that Hazardous materials are only used when necessary, are subject to proper Technical justification and approval, and, are documented and labelled in strict accordance with Project and Regulatory requirements
* To ensure similar appropriate processing and documentation are applied to materials subject to application restrictions
* To ensure that all MoD Policy on materials used in RN Warships is strictly observed

Revenue/Budget Responsibilities

* The Role will be responsible to the Engineering Manager for the delivery of their work packages within the agreed budget and timescale.

* Accepts responsibility for and demonstrates a visible commitment to Quality. Leads by example and sets high personal standards. Makes time for Quality as an integral part of the role and actively communicates on Quality matters.

Company/Industry Knowledge

* Ideally, the role should have 3 years’ experience in a Materials Engineering / Science role and have significant Materials selection and/or materials management experience in an industrial manufacturing environment. Again, ideally, this would have been gained in a marine / MoD / design / development context.
* Applicants with a Materials background that do not formally match these requirements but who are nevertheless genuinely keen to develop a career in Materials are encouraged to apply.


* Formal degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience / qualification.
* Member of an appropriate professional institution an advantage
* Chartered status or working towards Chartered status an advantage

Key Outputs/ Deliverables

* Technical input to the Supplier Requirements
* Technical review of the Supplier deliverables in support of the project decision making process

Describe with whom the Role regularly interfaces

* The Role functions in the Product Integrity team (covering Safety, Environmental and Materials). The role has everyday interaction with Safety and Environmental Engineering colleagues and also routinely interfaces with: Supply Chain, Suppliers reps, Technical Authority Managers and engineering teams, MOD Customer (Project and specialist), Support Team, Institute of Naval Medicine and Fire Testing labs.
