We are seeking a committed and experienced senior Biomedical Scientist to lead our client's Clinical Microbiology team on the beautiful Island of Guernsey , in the Channel Islands.
Reporting to the Head of Pathology Services, you will lead a small but busy team of four Biomedical Scientists and two Support Staff.
The role requires extensive advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of Clinical Microbiology, Virology, Mycology and Molecular Microbiology, together with proven leadership skills to manage a team of staff and strategically develop processes and procedures to support an evolving service.
Please note; Guernsey has adopted the AfC banding system, but have applied their own salary scale. The current Guernsey Band 8A salary is up to �80,716 plus an annual bonus of �1,605 and higher penalty rates; 36% evening/Saturday and 72% Sunday/BH.
Annual leave starts at 36 days up to 42 days with full credit for NHS service for annual leave and sick leave.
The laboratory receives approximately 35-40K specimens per year divided between Bacteriology, Serology, Mycology and Molecular Microbiology.
In addition, the department provides epidemiological data to the Infection Prevention & Control team and the Environmental and Public Health Directorate.
The Microbiology Department uses the following platforms:
- Biomerieux Vitek, BacT/Alert & Vidas
- Cepheid GeneXpert
- HMJackArc

Person requirements
- Biomedical Scientist with full HCPC registration.
- Current or recent UK senior Band 7 experience (or independent sector equivalent) including taking charge of the department
- A sound theoretical and practical knowledge of Clinical Microbiology, Virology, Mycology and Molecular Microbiology
- Experience with Maldi Tof would be an advantage but not essential
