The SEND home to school/college travel assistance team, is the customer face for determining entitlement to travel assistance for school aged children and eligible post 16/19 students. The team commission or arrange a range of provision including personal budgets, independent travel training, bus passes minibuses and taxis. The team works in close partnership with the Council’s passenger transport service, who deliver our in-house fleet and manage taxi contracts.  Together we are jointly responsible for ensuring that children and young people who are entitled to assistance, receive the most efficient best value service that can be arranged.  

The team manage customer expectations in a complex and often pressured environment, ensuring that decisions reflect the statutory framework and Council policy and that families receive a supportive and efficient service and are clear on what they are entitled to. 

The service is currently undertaking an efficiency review, to identify improvements in systems, processes, procurement and contracting.  The Travel Coordinator, will support the Transport Commissioning Officer in delivering the project programme. The successful postholder will have responsibility for supporting the implementation of new systems and processes, ensuring that they are effective and provide assurance that both statutory responsibilities and financial regulations are met.  This will include working in close partnership with colleagues across passenger transport, education and procurement and monitoring contract compliance of providers including taxi operators.

What is the job role?The role works with key stakeholders works with key stakeholders (including parents/carers, schools, taxi companies, our Passenger Transport Service and others) to implement the Council’s Travel assistance policy for school age and Post 16 and Post 19 students with Special Educational Needs. It does this through a high level of customer service and through a strong focus on processes to enable value for money is secured throughout the decision making process without compromising entitlement or safety.

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Who are we looking for?We are looking for a highly motivated person who has proven ability in managing electronic systems including databases and excel, has effective communication skills both verbal and written and is well organised with an eye for detail.  The person will have a good understanding of the context of eligibility for, and delivery of, travel assistance for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to enable the services meet quality standards and provide value for money.   

You will be a strong and supportive team member, who welcomes the opportunity to work creatively in an environment demanding continuous improvement and accountability.
