Mechanical Fitter / Train Maintainer


Pay – £20.65 per hour

A leading international rail company is seeking an experienced Train Maintainer for an ongoing project in their South London depot. Relevant mechanical qualification are essential, rail experience would be advantageous.

Shift Pattern:

Friday to Sunday days

Fri 09:00-21:00; Sat 08:00-20:00; Sun 07:00-19:00

33hours per week

Purpose of the Job

To work as a member of a team to service, maintain, repair and overhaul fleet of rail and underground trains, coaching stock and equipment, including the latest generation in train technology to laid down specifications. As part of a team, ensure that the fleet is serviced and maintained in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner whilst constantly seeking to improve quality. The role of the Train Maintainer is to ensure that an adequate supply of rolling stock is always available for passenger service by carrying out preventative maintenance and casualty repairs through regular and meticulous working practices in a safety critical environment.

Key Accountabilities

Use tools, plant and equipment in accordance with safety standards and prescribed working methods.
Carry out all electrical and mechanical tasks, ensuring standards of work comply with stringent mechanical and electrical working practices.
Carry out Rolling Stock testing procedures and fault diagnostic duties when appropriate.
Carry out all train repairs and maintenance as detailed in the Work Instructions/Quality Plans and to company specifications.

Routine primary fault finding (to level of competency)
Component exchange
Stores provision


Work as directed by and in co-operation with the Production Manager, will comply with:
All depot protection procedures
Understand and abide to safety notices, rules and regulations and follow safe working practices, H & S.A.W. and C.O.S.H.H.
Will adhere to and work within Quality Systems to the current standard.
Work as part of a team, complete or assist in any of the team's activities to ensure work is completed on time to specification.
Will be responsible for:
Routine exam work
Routine primary fault finding (to level of competency)
Component exchange
Stores provision
When trained able to carry out coach repairing tasks, plumbing, electrical/mechanical tasks, welding/burning/brazing.
Will be capable of accepting training in other skills and carry out duties, e.g. forklift, road vehicle driving (if certified), attend call-outs and breakdowns if required.
Will carry out final work and process inspections as required.
Will use IT systems that are work related.
Will attend call-outs and breakdowns if required if trained competent.
With other team members, will maintain good housekeeping systems of work areas.

Qualifications and Experience Required:

Practical knowledge and experience of mechanical and/or electrical engineering
Experience of working to procedures, work instructions and vehicle maintenance instructions
No Rail Experience required (but would be advantageous)
NVQ 2 or similar in Mechanical Engineering or relevant subject OR time-served apprenticeship
